An artificial intelligence algorithm helps diagnose and treat underlying causes of inflammation that lead to Long COVID. Patient Bruce Byl shares his story of recovery.
Like nearly 7 million other Americans, Michigan resident Bruce Byl has been struggling with brain fog, fatigue, insomnia, shortness of breath, and other common symptoms of Long COVID. A year after his initial recovery, Byl still hadn’t experienced any improvement. Then, Dr. Bruce Patterson turned all that around. According to Byl, the brain fog was the worst of his symptoms. “I would have to write down why I was going to the hardware store because I might get there and not remember why I was there,” he said. “Or I might be driving the car and not remember where I was going. I mean, it was that bad.”
Byl was scared to death. He thought, “Is this the way my life is gonna end?” Byl wasn’t alone in his fear. Statistics from the CDC show that approximately one in five Americans who contract COVID-19 go on to experience some form of new, lingering, or recurring symptoms. Fortunately for Byl, Dr. Bruce Patterson came to the rescue.
Dr. Bruce Patterson, a former Medical Director at Stanford University School of Medicine, believes the main cause of Long COVID is inflammation that was already present in the body prior to a COVID-19 infection.
“The fact is, the underlying inflammation of the blood vessels is what’s going on in long COVID in causing the majority of the symptoms,” he said. Based on this premise, Patterson developed a blood test that uses biomarkers to diagnose patients. Out of 150 different biomarkers, he found one particular signature that indicated Long COVID.
Now he uses artificial intelligence (AI) to pinpoint the cause of the inflammation in individual patients. “We actually treat the cause,” he says, whether it’s fibromyalgia, undiagnosed heart disease, or another condition.
After six to 12 weeks of treatment, he explains, “[Patients] don’t come back, because we’ve treated the underlying cause of Long COVID.”
Patterson’s protocol has been approved in the U.K. and is being reviewed by the U.S. FDA.
Byl describes a simple path to recovery. He got a blood test, and had the results analyzed through Patterson’s online Chronic COVID Treatment Center. That was followed by a virtual conference with Patterson and with Byl’s own primary care physician. The AI algorithm had diagnosed Byl with vascular inflammation, for which Patterson prescribed several cardiovascular disease medications that were FDA-approved.
“After about a week, maybe 10 days of being on this medical protocol, I started feeling better, and I then continued to feel better,” he said. “The guy literally gave me my life back.”
